The silicon carbide material provides for a wear-resistant protective barrier that increases the anti-skid coating’s longevity. A post-treatment galvanizing process is suggested when using TH335, which produces a wear-resistant, non-skid coating using Iron based material. TH604 is applied using a twin wire arc spray process sometimes called metalizing.  Two spools of TH604 wire are put on either side of our arc spray machine which then energizes one positive and the other negative, these wires strike an arc when they come within close proximity of each other at the gun head which melts the material.  Dry compressed air is added which both atomizes and propels the material to the substrate.  While the material is molten in the arc zone at the gun head it quickly starts to solidify in flight, the semi-molten particles are propelled at such a rate that they become a splat when they hit the substrate. This process only requires electricity and compressed air, therefore, the process is relatively inexpensive to operate.  Furthermore, the equipment and material are portable and mobile so it is just as easy to operate whether in the field or in a [shop](https://saftrax.com/manufacturing-fabrication/). Application of TH604 is considered to be a low skill level process, successful coatings can, and have been, applied with a minimal amount of training.  It is normally recommended to apply a sealer coat over a thermal sprayed coating that is applied to steel. The Anti-slip coating system will accept this sealer coating without degradation to the Anti-slip properties. This material was developed for a cost-effective production application. This is a “patented” process, which allows for a high percentage of ceramic within an aluminum matrix. The purpose of this wire is to provide a wear resistant surface to aluminum, steel and stainless steel that is long lasting and protects against corrosion while maintainig an average coefficient of friction of 1.1. # USES: Anti-slip coatings for pedestrian traffic and personnel safety on boat decks, flooring, steps, ladders, walkways, scaffolding, etc. Particularly steel and aluminum substrates subject to corrosion. Anti-skid coatings for car/truck ramps, forklift loading ramps, aircraft landing areas, or any application requiring both nonskid and corrosion protection. Thickness can be measured using a standard ferrous mil gauge in conformance with SSPC-PA2. Note; with having such a high peak to valley ratio it is recommended to average together the coating thickness readings. Layers: Apply layers in a cross hatching pattern. Stronger bonds are achieved by applying multiple layers, rather than one heavy layer. Travel Speed: 12” inches per second (305 mm per second) Gun Angle: 90 degrees to surface is ideal, angles of up to 45 degrees produce satisfactory coatings. Once the initial (textured) hatched coating is applied turn the air pressure up to 90 psi for the topcoat. Note; the spray pattern will increase in size. Spray the entire area topping the already coated areas as well as filling in any lightly coated areas in a standard cross hatch method. While these textures greatly vary they all still maintain Coefficient of Friction well above the industry standard requirements, averaging up to 1.1 COF dry and .97 COF wet. These are textures or grades used when classifying our TH604 and TH605 sprayed nonskid which use alumina oxide and silicone carbide as the hard wear resistant particles within an aluminum matrix. It’s worth noting that no matter the grade our oxide and carbide content remain the same, only their surface texture is altered thru application parameters. These coatings also offer corrosion protection and do not need galvanized after treatment. For use on, aluminum, stainless steel, steel, ductile iron or after a product has been galvanized. # Grade \#1 Course Texture This is our most aggressive texture with greater peak to valley ratios resulting in a very rough texture. This texture is most commonly used in industrial and heavy duty applications needing the most grip possible. Although the roughness is less than those of our other grades it offers non skid properties that meet specifications. While most concerned with slip and falls look for the most texture to prevent falls this texture appeals to applications where there is a concern of secondary damage after a fall such as scraps and cuts. It is a iron based high carbon alloy that is perfectly matched for products that are to be galvanized. Unlike our TH064 and TH605 this product does not offer any corrosion resistance by itself so a secondary treatment (such as galvanizing) is needed after applying in order to protect it from corrosion. # Grade \#4G Course Texture This is our most aggressive texture obtained using our TH335. Whilst very aggressive before galvanizing a slight degree of texture is lost (of filled in) after galvanizing. This is a great solution to harsh industrial applications. While these textures greatly vary they all still maintain Coefficient of Friction well above the industry standard requirements, averaging up to 1.1 COF dry and .97 COF wet. These are textures or grades used when classifying our TH604 and TH605 sprayed nonskid which use alumina oxide and silicone carbide as the hard wear resistant particles within an aluminum matrix. It’s worth noting that no matter the grade our oxide and carbide content remain the same, only their surface texture is altered thru application parameters. These coatings also offer corrosion protection and do not need galvanized after treatment. For use on, aluminum, stainless steel, steel, ductile iron or after a product has been galvanized. # Grade \#1 Course Texture This is our most aggressive texture with greater peak to valley ratios resulting in a very rough texture. This texture is most commonly used in industrial and heavy duty applications needing the most grip possible. It is not as aggressive as #1 but more aggressive than #3. Most commonly used on pedestrian walkways, gangways, vault doors, municipal manhole lids to name a few. Although the roughness is less than those of our other grades it offers non skid properties that meet specifications. While most concerned with slip and falls look for the most texture to prevent falls this texture appeals to applications where there is a concern of secondary damage after a fall such as scraps and cuts. It is a iron based high carbon alloy that is perfectly matched for products that are to be galvanized. Unlike our TH064 and TH605 this product does not offer any corrosion resistance by itself so a secondary treatment (such as galvanizing) is needed after applying in order to protect it from corrosion. # Grade \#4G Course Texture This is our most aggressive texture obtained using our TH335. Whilst very aggressive before galvanizing a slight degree of texture is lost (of filled in) after galvanizing. This is a great solution to harsh industrial applications. Base Material: Steel, Aluminum, most all metals, and concrete Thickness: 20 to 50 mils normal, thicker coatings can be applied with restricted spray techniques. Thickness can be measured using a standard ferrous mil gauge in conformance with SSPC-PA2. Note; with having such a high peak to valley ratio it is recommended to average together the coating thickness readings. Layers: Apply layers in a cross hatching pattern. Stronger bonds are achieved by applying multiple layers, rather than one heavy layer. Travel Speed: 12” inches per second (305 mm per second) Gun Angle: 90 degrees to surface is ideal, angles of up to 45 degrees produce satisfactory coatings. Spray Distance: 3” to 8” ( $7 6 ~ \\mathsf { m m }$ to $2 0 3 ~ \\mathsf { m m }$ ) is ideal, while distances from 3” to 10” ( $7 6 ~ \\mathsf { m m }$ to $2 5 4 ~ \\mathsf { m m }$ ) produce satisfactory coatings Bond Strength: Min. 1000 psi, ASTM D4541 TYPE V or Equivalent. Be sure to move at consistent one revolution a second as to avoid heavy build up in any one area and insure even coverage. Air pressure should be set according to the texture desired. Once the entire area is covered, spray over the already covered area in the adjacent direction making a crosshatch pattern. Once the initial (textured) hatched coating is applied turn the air pressure up to 90 psi for the topcoat. Note; the spray pattern will increase in size. Spray the entire area topping the already coated areas as well as filling in any lightly coated areas in a standard cross hatch method. Method #2- Holding the gun at angles from 45 to 90 degrees from work piece at a distance of ${ \_ { 3 } } ^ { \\prime \\prime } { \\cdot } { 8 } ^ { \\prime \\prime }$ , start spraying a line from a set point, being sure to move at a rate of 1 ft. per second consistently to avoid heavy build up. This is a “patented” process, which allows for a high percentage of ceramic within an aluminum matrix. The purpose of this wire is to provide a wear resistant surface to aluminum, steel and stainless steel that is long lasting and protects against corrosion while maintainig an average coefficient of friction of 1.1. # USES: Anti-slip coatings for pedestrian traffic and personnel safety on boat decks, flooring, steps, ladders, walkways, scaffolding, etc. Particularly steel and aluminum substrates subject to corrosion. Anti-skid coatings for car/truck ramps, forklift loading ramps, aircraft landing areas, or any application requiring both nonskid and corrosion protection. To control corrosion, wear, abrasion, and impact. When applied to a steel substrate this material will provide corrosion protection and wear resistance properties. It provides equal corrosion protection as that of pure aluminum and wear resistance far superior to that of any material presently known to have both these unique properties. The product description, test procedures, and test results are reported herein. | | | | --- | --- | | Test Condition | Results (British Pendulum Number/PTV) | | Grade 1 | | | Dry | 95 | | Wet | 85 | | Grade 2 | | | Dry | 94 | | Wet | 90 | | | Grade 3 | | Dry | 80 | | Wet | 80 | Test Method: The test specimens were evaluated in accordance with ASTM E303-93 (Reapproved 2013), Standard Test Method for Measuring Surface Frictional Properties Using the British Pendulum Tester. ## Slip-Resistant Surfacing Guidelines (September 3, 2019) Slip-Resistant Surfacing for Junction Boxes, Cable Vaults, and Pull Boxes Where slip-resistant junction boxes, cable vaults, or pull boxes are required, each box or vault shall have slip-resistant surfacing material applied to the steel lid and frame of the box or vault. Where the exposed portion of the frame is $1 / \_ { 2 }$ inch wide or less, slip-resistant surfacing material may be omitted from that portion of the frame. Slip-resistant surfacing material shall be identified with a permanent marking on the underside of each box or vault lid where it is applied. The permanent marking shall be formed with a mild steel weld bead, with a line thickness of at least 1/8 inch. The marking shall include a two character identification code for the type of material used and the year of manufacture or application. The following materials are approved for application as slip-resistant material, and shall use the associated identification codes: 1. Harsco Industrial IKG, Mebac #1 - Steel: M1 2. W. S. Molnar Co., SlipNOT Grade 3 – Coarse: S3 3. Thermion, SafTrax TH604 Grade #1 – Coarse: T1 ## Surface Texture Options # Surface Texture Options # Surface Textures of TH604/TH605 SAFTRAX, a Thermion nonskid, can be applied in many different texture varieties from very aggressive to less aggressive. While these textures greatly vary they all still maintain Coefficient of Friction well above the industry standard requirements, averaging up to 1.1 COF dry and .97 COF wet. These are textures or grades used when classifying our TH604 and TH605 sprayed nonskid which use alumina oxide and silicone carbide as the hard wear resistant particles within an aluminum matrix. It’s worth noting that no matter the grade our oxide and carbide content remain the same, only their surface texture is altered thru application parameters. These coatings also offer corrosion protection and do not need galvanized after treatment. For use on, aluminum, stainless steel, steel, ductile iron or after a product has been galvanized. # Grade \#1 Course Texture This is our most aggressive texture with greater peak to valley ratios resulting in a very rough texture. This texture is most commonly used in industrial and heavy duty applications needing the most grip possible. It is not as aggressive as #1 but more aggressive than #3. Most commonly used on pedestrian walkways, gangways, vault doors, municipal manhole lids to name a few. Although the roughness is less than those of our other grades it offers non skid properties that meet specifications. While most concerned with slip and falls look for the most texture to prevent falls this texture appeals to applications where there is a concern of secondary damage after a fall such as scraps and cuts. It is a iron based high carbon alloy that is perfectly matched for products that are to be galvanized. Unlike our TH064 and TH605 this product does not offer any corrosion resistance by itself so a secondary treatment (such as galvanizing) is needed after applying in order to protect it from corrosion. # Grade \#4G Course Texture This is our most aggressive texture obtained using our TH335. Whilst very aggressive before galvanizing a slight degree of texture is lost (of filled in) after galvanizing. This is a great solution to harsh industrial applications.
